Foot print

This track was found June 21, 2009 in Plainfield, IN. Enroute on my bike I was drawn to stop and take a walk down a stream I had not been down for a while. Upon arriving at a familiar place along the bank, I stood there taking in the beauty of the surrounding area and looked down and there was a very plane but not fresh footprint! The second toe was slightly damaged by a dog’s track but all five toes were visibly clear in person.

It appeared to have stepped out of the water and the following step was to be on rocks, so one track was all there was. I rushed back home and dug out my duffle bag I keep prepared for such events complete with plaster paris and such. I returned and poured out the plaster only to be horrified in discovering that plaster has a shelf life! It wasn’t setting up! I didn’t dare leave it for fear of someone messing with it in my absence as it was a communal area. I was determined to wait until dark if necessary to give it every chance to set up.

I waited for four hours until I thought of someone to call to bring me more plaster. In the course of the four hours, 4 or 5 times, “someone” tossed a rock out onto the gravel bed to let me know I was not alone. Not knowing if it had set up at all down inside, I could only pour the new plaster on top the old and hope for the best. When the new plaster set up, I had found a piece of 2x 4 about as long as from my elbows to finger tips and dug the gravel out along side the cast. I then laid a towel on top of that so I could hopefully move it safely at home.

Very carefully then, I took it at both ends and gently turned it over on top the towel. Sadly it broke in half upon lifting and the toes fell off upon coming to rest. I scooped the goo of the first plaster off and took it home, where I tried to “heal” it with the remaining plaster. The cast photo, with my foot in it for comparison is actually about 2” larger than the original track due to the repair job. Sadly it is actually a cast of a cast. Also, it appears to be the left foot because I didn’t want to risk turning it back over, as it may be fragile. The original track I figure to have been approximately 11”x 18”.
